In business and in life, strife is unavoidable. It’s important to remember, though, that the way you choose to deal with negatives will determine whether you achieve success in anything.
At Sparta Consulting Group we pride ourselves on our ability to stay upbeat and maintain a positive attitude, no matter what comes our way. We wholeheartedly believe that there is nothing to be gained from complaining or wallowing. Here, we will share with you a few ways to effectively cope with negativity.
1. Start with a list…
Though it might feel like the world is crashing down around you, it probably isn’t as bad as you think. The first thing to do is to gain some perspective. Take time out of your day to sit down and make a list of the positives. What is going right for you? What is still salvageable from a failure? The more positives you list, the better you will feel.
2. Now make another list! What can you control?
It’s important to recognize the difference between ‘controllables’ and ‘uncontrollables’. When life or work gets stressful, it’s easy to lump these together and feel totally overwhelmed. Write down all of the things that are stressing you out, and then divide up the list. Ask yourself the honest question: “Is there anything at all that I can do to improve this situation?” We guarantee that you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that many so-called ‘negatives’ are at least partially in your control.
3. Question yourself.
This one can be a little tricky, but sometimes you have to call yourself out! “Hey self, what’s with your attitude?” Perhaps you’ve identified something on your list that is truly not controllable at the moment. Before you lose your cool, ask yourself if it’s really worth getting upset about. A great trick is to ask yourself: “Will this matter in a year from now?” Not to mention, losing your attitude might only make matters worse! Keep this in mind next time you start to stress.
4. Surround yourself with positive people — and cut out the negative ones!
One of the worst things you can do when you’re down is surround yourself with others who are complaining or naysaying. If you notice a discouraging presence in your life, now more than ever it’s important to remove that person from your day to day affairs. If you’re really going through a challenging time, you need to feed off of the energy of positive, happy, strong people — not the opposite!
5. Take care of yourself.
During times of crisis, no matter how big or small, it is important to take care of your physical health, as this will help translate into your mental health. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating well and drinking enough water. You can even try some good old fashioned sweating. Sometimes the best way to work off your frustration is to put on your sneakers and go for a good long run! The more sound your health, the more positive you’ll be capable of feeling.
